Phyllis Matthews (McCourt)

Dark curly hair, approximately 5 ft 2 ins. She could play the piano and mouth organ by ear. Phyll married Louis McCourt when she was 17 in 1927. Due to the Depression life was hard- no work and no money.

By 1939 there were six children- Knowla, Terry, Desmond, Patricia, Barry and Margaret. The family moved back and forth from Millicent and Beachport in South Australia and Horsham in Victoria.

This lost tribe of the McCourts lived like Nomads up to the late 40s. Phyllis and her family lived in shared houses, tin sheds and tents. She had to deal with all this hardship and still keep the family together, which she did- at all costs- 'we stuck like glue'.

Phyll worked in a canvas factory and a re-trimming factory for army casing for shells prior to 1945. In 1945 she got a job at the local hospital as a working supervisor in the laundry, which she did for thirty years then retired in 1975.
