John Moore married Olive Whittaker in 1889 and they had 7 surviving children (see family tree p.3 ).
When they were first married they lived on the farm at Chinaman’s Creek. It seems John had hoped to inherit the farm from his father, but as William died intestate control passed to his mother who immediately sold the farm to a descendant of Thomas Ottrey, William Sharp.
John was a tall man and appeared to have had many jobs following the familys removal from the farm- among them carter, carpenter and sewing machine salesman. He appears to have been shiftless and drank a fair bit. Olive kept the children by taking in dressmaking, she was a tailoress by trade and was in great demand in Castlemaine. Daph used to help her with hems and things and also by sewing for the family. Olive was short and in later years was bent over with a hump in the back. (?Osteoporosis). She was always regarded as a kind hearted lovely lady.
It seems as if John and Olive battled as their parents did before them. In 1917 John thought all their financial problems would be solved by building a boarding house at Wanget, a small village in the Hunter Valley in NSW built especially for the workers constructing Chichester Dam, a major water source for Newcastle. Daph and Else were sent for to come and help, but things went really badly and the two of them had to go back to Warrnambool. From Wanget, John, Olive and Nettie went to Newcastle where they bought a block of land.
They pulled down the house they had built in Wanget and sent the timber to Newcastle. The timber was stolen between Wanget and Newcastle-they eventually sold the block.
In the meantime Nettie married Herbert Green and the two of them lived with Herbert’s mother. After Mrs Green Senior died Olive and John Moore lived with Nettie and Herbie. John was drinking a lot and Nettie told him that she would not have him in the house. He moved out for a time but came back and was there until he died. Olive lived with Nett until she died.
